The New York Red Bulls will travel to Los Angeles to face the Western Conference table-toppers LAFC on Sunday, 26th June 2022, at the Banc of California Stadium at 3:00 PM ET.
New York Red Bulls also sit in the 2nd spot in the Eastern Conference and these two teams have met only twice in their history. They have both won a game each.
Red Bulls and LAFC boast of some of the best American talents in US soccer along with the addition of famous players from Europe. LAFC defeated the Red Bulls in a pre-season game with a scoreline of 6 goals to 1.
The home team enters this match as favorites to win but the Red Bulls will have a point to prove after being humiliated in the pre-season game.
Previous Meetings
When these two teams met in 2018, New York won the game by a 1-goal margin. New York took the lead in the first half with Daniel Royer’s strike as he hand them the lead after the 38th minute. It was an interesting first half with both teams creating good chances to score more, but LAFC couldn’t equalize.
The second half saw a fightback from the LAFC players and Diego Rossi scored to bring the game level to 1-1.
It looked as though the game would end in a draw but New York’s Daniel Royer had other plans. He scored in extra added time to take three points from the game.
Their second game in the league came in 2019, a year after Red Bulls took the win. LAFC was looking for payback as they scored two first-half goals before the 30th minute, but the Red Bulls got back level on goals as Brian White and Casseres made it 2-2 before the end of the first half.
LAFC came out strong again in the second half and scored two more goals through Carlos Vela and Segura, ending the game with a score of 4-2.
In this year’s pre-season, Los Angeles FC had a dominating game and beat the Red Bulls 6-1. The New York Red Bulls opened the scoring first but were unable to contain LAFC’s deadly attacks and lost the game.
LAFC – Western Conference
The Los Angeles FC is on a high this season as they sit on top of the Western Conference table. They had an excellent start to their season, collecting 23 points from a possible 30 in the first 10 games.
However, they have gone on a poor run the last couple of games. Their last defeat was to the Colorado Rapids, where they lost 2-0.
LAFC had most of the ball during the entire game but could manage to create chances like they usually do. They had two shots on target the whole game as opposed to Colorado’s 14. In the end, soccer is a game won only when you take shots at the goal, and unfortunately for LAFC, they couldn’t register more shots.
The losing form continued to the next game for LAFC as they faced Austin FC, ending the game with a 2-1 defeat. Carlos Vela scored a goal to give the LAFC fans hope, but the two goals scored by Austin were too much for Vela alone to deal with.
Since the loss to Austin FC, LAFC has regained confidence as they returned to winning ways. They faced Columbus Crew and won the game with Carlos Vela on the scoresheet again and Fagundez adding the second goal, taking them to the top of the table.
Their last league match was against the San Jose Earthquakes, which they also won with a tiny margin. They drew the first half with two goals each, but LAFC took the lead in the second half, and their resolute defending got them the win.
New York Red Bulls – Eastern Conference
The New York Red Bulls have played 16 matches so far this season and sit second on the Eastern Conference table with a point behind their city rivals, New York City. They have won 7 matches, lost 4, and drawn 5 out of those 16 games.
Inconsistency has been a problem for the New York Red Bulls this season. Even though they went on a 6-game unbeaten run, they were able to win only two out of those six games. They would’ve been in pole position in the Eastern Conference if they had won another game or two.
It would be an understatement to say that the New York Red Bulls are not playing up to their potential. They have picked up only 7 points from a possible 15 in their previous 5 games, which hasn’t helped them in their claim for the top spot.
New York Red Bulls were involved in one of the most entertaining games of this season as they drew with Chicago Fire in a high-octane match. Chicago led the game 3-2 till the 90th minute, and it looked like they were going away with the win. However, Klimala scored for New York in the dying minutes of extra time to salvage a point.
Los Angeles FC vs. New York Red Bulls – Prediction
There is no guarantee how the New York Red Bulls will turn up for the game on Sunday in LA. Their inconsistency this season has made them unpredictable.
Most soccer fans are predicting a win for LAFC as they are flying high in the league and have more star players who can get the job done. Their attack is too good for New York’s fragile defense line.
Only time will tell if the New York Red Bulls can overcome this tricky challenge. If they don’t step up on Sunday, it will be business as usual for the star-studded LAFC team.
